Lloyd Birrell - CEO
BMI is led by Lloyd Birrell (CEO) - a leading figure in the mining industry. Originally from the accounting and legal sector, he commenced consulting in the resource sector in 1998, focusing on mastering multidisciplinary skills such as process engineering, underground and surface mining, metallurgy and geology. Previously Chief Executive Officer of Agnes Mining, director of ASX listed Mintails Limited, Ergo Mining (Pty) Ltd, Skeat Gold Mining (Pty) Ltd and HVH Gold Mining (Pty) Ltd, Mr Birrell also founded Stonewall Resources and was the Chief Executive Officer between 2010 and 2015. He is now also founder and CEO of BMI with an impressive reputation and track record for successfully recommissioning gold assets and restoring them to profitability.

Deon Robbertze - CFO
BMI’s executive team also comprises of Deon Robbertze (CFO) a Chartered Accountant with a Masters of Business Leadership (UNISA) and more than 20 years’ experience at senior financial management levels in the mining industry including as Financial and Commercial Manager at Kumba Base Metals (now part of Exxaro) and Chief Financial Officer at Xstrata South Africa (now part of Glencore). He has been extensively involved in mining projects in sub-Saharan Africa and as far afield as China and has held director positions on numerous boards globally. His experience includes corporate finance and structuring, project implementation, international tax and global financial reporting.

Tony Knight – COO
Tony Knight (COO) brings with him more than 40 years of mining experience of which more than 30 was in management positions of various mining operations across southern Africa. Mr Knight was General Manager at Pan African Mining and subsequently promoted to Managing Director, responsible for 3 gold operations between 2004 and 2008. He then joined Vantage Goldfields as COO responsible for Lily Mine and Barbrook until 2011 where-after he became CEO of Mine2Market establishing a refractory gold/copper concentrate export business in Barberton.

Dr Shengfei Gan – Group Geological Manager
Dr Shengfei Gan joins Birrell Mining as the Group Geological Manager. His past roles include Head of Chinese Market Development in Eferton Group, General Manager of Geology in Stonewall Mining, CEO of China African Precious Metals, Senior Strategist of Anglo American, Chief Representative of Kumba Resources in China, as well as Marketing Manager and Chief Geologist of Iscor Ltd. Dr Gan obtained his PhD degree in geology from Beijing University in 1989 and joined Rand Afrikaans University in 1993 as a postdoctoral research fellow, focusing on studies of gold mineralization in the Limpopo Belt of South Africa. In 2000, Dr Gan completed his MBA studies with De Montfort University in South Africa. In the past 25 years, Dr Gan has been engaged in mineral target generation, exploration, resources and production management for both open-pit and underground operations. He has rich experience in mining investments, sourcing and procurement, business management, deal-making and cross-culture management. Dr Gan is a member of the Geological Society of South Africa, Association of Mine Managers of South Africa and SACNASP.
Hugh Lloyd – Chairman (Kobolondo)
Mr Lloyd has 40 years’ experience in heavy engineering and resources. He was a Managing Director of Babcock Group of Companies for 10 years following which he was a strategic consultant to numerous companies, including Nedbank, CSI and Carl Edith. He subsequently consulted to Afrox Group for 6 years prior to founding Deep Water Research to explore deep water aquifers off the Southern Cape Coast. As well as advising Stonewall Mining, Mr Lloyd partnered with Lloyd Birrell in 2001 as the South African representatives of Sonatrach, the world’s second largest natural gas producer in the acquisition and development of the Ibhubhezi gas fields and the marketing and offtake structures thereof. Mr Lloyd has also been a participant and a partner of multiple ventures with Lloyd Birrell and has extensive networks globally.

Sue Elsey – CEO (Kobolondo)
Sue Elsey joins the Birrell Mining Group as the CEO of Kobolondo Mining Swaziland and as Sustainable Development Specialist Advisor to the Birrell Mining operations. Ms Elsey graduated from the University of London in 1997 with a Master’s degree in Third World Development and has resided in South Africa for more than 18 years, 16 of which have been in the mining industry. Ms Elsey specialises in transformation and sustainable development matters within the mining sector and has established several successful businesses as well as directed several conferences in this field. Ms Elsey is also a Non-Executive Director and founding shareholder of MTS Holdings Group of companies.
